"Achieving gender equality requires the engagement of women and men, girls and boys. It is everyone's responsibility."

In 1776, Americans banded together to stand up against the oppressive force of British rule. People of all different sexes, genders, races, and minority groups stood together to declare their independence from Britain in the hopes of living in a world where they had the freedom to be who they wanted to be. However, when the Founding Fathers framed the United States Constitution, it was obvious that eventual First Lady Abigail Adams eloquently written words, “Remember the Ladies” were not remembered. The rights defined in the new Constitution were interpreted and applied differently depending on an individual’s sex.
Women have continually been viewed as unequal to male citizens and consequently have had to work tirelessly to achieve the “certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” that were promised to “the people of the United States” (United States Constitution). Since the writing of the Constitution, the issue of equality has been a cause of struggle for women and men who support equality and the feminist movement. Overtime changes to policy and society have occurred that have aided in the fight against inequality, but still today women are paid less for their work, if paid at all, seen as unfit to hold certain positions and roles, and abused all based on the belief that they are the inferior sex.
